This thesis investigates the challenges to Switzerland's traditional model of international relations and its specific interactions with the European Union in light of the growing tendencies of globalisation and interdependence observed over the last 30 years. The research aims to assess whether Switzerland's preference for agreements over EU membership continues to be effective and still valid within the current global landscape. Beginning with a review of current literature, the study develops a framework centred on globalisation and interdependence, emphasising Switzerland's position in this changing global context. It then discusses the obstacles posed by globalisation to the classical Swiss ideals of neutrality and intergovernmental multilateralism. The thesis examines how globalisation has influenced Switzerland, including interconnections, cultural exchanges, migration trends, technological integration, and political repercussions. A case study is used to present a thorough evaluation of Swiss-EU ties, tracing the evolution of their agreements, analysing accords, and their consequences for Swiss neutrality and global engagement.
